We are excited to announce that registration is open for The Coalition of Higher Education Assistance Organizations’ (COHEAO) 2019 Annual Conference. The event will be January 28-January 30 at the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City, located right next to Washington, D.C.!

What is the Annual Conference?

The COHEAO Annual Conference is the must-attend event for student financial services professionals on campus and their vendor partners, particularly those with an interest in the happenings of Washington and its impact on managing campus-based aid and campus accounts receivable. Previous conferences have included Congressional speakers like Sen. Tammy Baldwin (WI), Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (NC), Rep. Luke Messer (IN), Rep. Mark Pocan (WI), , and top Congressional staff!

This conference serves as a critical advocacy event for financial services issues on campus, such as reforms to the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.  The conference will also feature a session with information on COHEAO’s successful advocacy efforts to secure a provision in the final Fiscal Year 2019 Education appropriations package allowing payments to schools for Perkins Loan servicing.

The conference will include a one-day financial wellness workshop and conclude with a trip to Capitol Hill for attendees to visit with their members of Congress and their staff. The financial wellness workshop will be free to all attendees of the annual conference and $225 for those who wish only to attend the financial wellness sessions.

Conference Agenda

The 2019 annual conference features a packed agenda with insights for everyone involved in  financial aid and student debt collection. Remarks from the COHEAO President will kick off the conference, followed by an update on government actions in Washington D.C. that affect the future of campus-based financial aid, including what’s happening with Perkins Loan funds.   Informed experts will provide exclusive updates on where they anticipate key higher education issues moving in the new Congress, including possibilities for the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA). The conference is happening just a few weeks after the new Congress takes office so it will be an early chance to learn details about what is being planned.

Other sessions will include discussions on student loan debt consolidation, bankruptcy with PLUS loan “claw-backs,” and financial aid fraud.  For the first time, the Conference will highlight a session devoted to mental health concerns currently facing college campuses. As is the COHEAO tradition, the first full day will wind down with a silent auction and reception to benefit the COHEAO scholarship fund. The auction will feature an assortment of prizes generously donated by members and some fun contests.

After the conference ends, attendees will have an opportunity on Wednesday Jan. 30  to visit legislators on Capitol Hill.  If you are new to Congressional advocacy, COHEAO will pair you up with more experienced advocates.
